I have a habit of using this one quite often. I don’t always proclaim it outloud but it runs through my head much more often anyone probably realizes.
Success secret #31… you don’t have to believe it to make it true. It amazes how many people believe that truth is dependent upon their acceptance. Truth has nothing to do with whether or not you bleive it. Truth is not always an absolute because there are instances where it is based on perspective. For example, if I say, “It is warm outside,” you may say that I am lying because it is only 50 degress but from my perspective that may be considered warm.
This is a secret to success because I have engaged in conversations with people who felt like their position was the only one that matterd. They were prepared to argue their point to the death of the issue because they believed that their perspective encompassed the truth about the situation. This is not always the case. It is imperative that you practice active listening to decipher truth and realize that truth is not universal nor it is dependant on your belief.
Effective communication requires that you listen to understand not to be right. One person’s truth may not be believable to you but understanding their perspective will help you to have an intelligible conversation.
I completely agree that “truth” is relative, but people usually view their perspective as absolute. Appoaching any conversation, business or otherwise, with a predetermined truth kills communication because you only register the ideas that align with your thinking. I’ve found that I gain the most from other people’s ideas by first making sure I clearly understand what they are saying, and not just thinking about what to say as a clever comeback. In doing this I have been amazed to find that often, at the core, my ideas and those of others are not so very different.
Reminds me of the Secret, ” Ask, Believe and Receive”.
