It’s all about… Shivawn

As a Business Consultant, I provide new clients with a complimentary consultation so that they can figure out whether they want to work with me but also so that I can figure out if I want to work with them because consulting with a client involves a lot of interaction.  It also involves working with people that are receptive to taking your advice.

Shivawn Mitchell, Owner, LOVE Magazine

When Shivawn contacted me about her business, I was looking forward to her deciding to work with me because I knew I wanted to work with her.  She was so prepared during our conversation and she wasn’t afraid to admit the areas that she needed some help.  We talked, she asked questions and she listended to what I had to say.

During the course of us working together, Shivawn has proven to be one of the sweetest and kindest young ladies that I have had the pleasure of working with.  She knows exactly what she wants from her business and how she wants her company to be a value to her clients.  The biggest bonus is her willingness to do the work and to do it the right way.  She doesn’t try to find ways to cut corners but takes the time to get the job done professionally and efficiently.

So… you may be asking, “what does she do?”  Shivawn is the Owner of L.O.V.E. Magazine, an online lifestyle magazine  for young professionals.  Today is all about Shivawn Mitchell (and her birthday is this week).  Please take a moment to check her out and show some LOVE to her magazine :)

Thanks for taking some time to show Shivawn some love.  Don’t forget to check back every Wednesday, it could be all about YOU next!

Giving back is sexy… featuring Jerry Azumah, former NFL Chicago Bear & founder of ASAP Foundation

It seems that a lot of men try to figure out what they should wear, what they should do and/or say, even how they should behave to be considered sexy in our society.  They often go from one extreme of being cool and aloof to the other, being so full of swag until there isn’t room for anyone to be around them.

For most women, a man who is willing to give his time, talents  and resources will rank higher than any guy in designer labels, driving luxury vehicles or talking the talk without walking the walk.  A smart woman will realize that if her man does not respect those around him, it is unlikely that he will show her very much respect.  A man who gives unselfishly of himself to his community because he sees more potential in our future than hopelessness is one to be recognized.

Jerry Azumah, Founder, ASAP Foundation

Jerry Azumah has found the secret to sexy and to success.  Not only has he retired from a successful career with the Chicago Bears but he is now showing young boys and grown men the true definition of sexy.  Many young boys dream of making it to the NFL but how many of them consider what will happen once that career ends.  Many men attain professional success but focus more on their personal accomplishments than helping to uplift their community.  Jerry uses his celebrity status to inspire others and show them that giving back is sexy.  It’s not just about what you can buy for yourself but how much you can help those around you.

Whether you are a fan of the Chicago Bears or just enjoy seeing young professionals redefine our society’s definition of sexy and successful, Jerry Azumah is a man to watch.  These days, the well-dressed Mr. Azumah can be seen on U.S. Cellular Bears Post Game Live and CTL as a studio analyst/Bears expert for Comcast SportsNet as well as donating his time to local charities and supporting various events that bring awareness to worthy causes.

I could go on and on about Jerry’s professional accomplishments, community achievements and accolades but I think you should take a few moments to check out Jerry for yourself and some of the projects that he supports…

Join me Wednesday, May 19 at the Hotel Sax in Chicago to support Jerry’s ASAP Foundation.  Azumah is hosting the 2nd Annual Chance of a Lifetime Poker Tournament and Casino Night.  I’m not a gambling girl but I know this event will be a winner.

If you can’t make it, visit www.theasapfoundation.org to make a donation to the ASAP Foundation and check back on Thursday for a recap of the event.

It’s all about… Harold Love

Rev. Harold M. Love Jr. Minister, St Paul AME Church

Dr. Love, as he will soon be called, and I became friends many, many moons ago.  We met while I was living in Nashville and attending Lee Chapel AME Church.  Rev. Love, as he is now called, was visiting the church, if I remember correctly.  His mother and sisters are members of the church but the thing that struck me about him was the way everyone, young and old, gravitated toward him.

We were later introduced and I realized what the magnetism was.  When you think of most ministers, they are stuffy and pretty self-righteous.  They don’t always allow you to be your whole self around them rather you find yourself trying to measure up to some standard that you think is expected.  Rev. Love is different.  He is so down to earth with a great sense of humor and a true compassion for helping others.  This attitude and acceptance makes it very easy to talk to him and not feel as though you are trying up to an expectation.

I had the pleasure of working with him on a political campaign.  As a political science major from Vanderbilt, you can imagine that I had a very idealized view of American politics and it was also somewhat skewed.  Getting out in the Nashville community and talking to people about their political views, was not only eye-opening but also somewhat scary.  I was amazed at the level of apathy that exists in the black community about problems that we should have been addressing years ago.  I am the type of person that thinks every wrong should immediately be corrected and people should see the error of their ways and conform to what is best for society.  Rev. Love has a different approach.  He is one of those “meet you where you are” type people who doesn’t try to change others but leads by an example that others want to emulate.

I have had the pleasure of attending his church, St. Paul AME Church, as well observing him social and religious situations.  He never waivers from his faith but has a very practical method of leading those around him.  Please take a moment to get to know one of my good friends and a true leader in the Nashville community, Rev. Harold M. Love Jr.

  • Find him on Facebook and witness his efforts to make his community a better place
  • Visit his church, St Paul AME Church
  • Get LinkedIn with him and contact him if you ever need a young, dynamic speaker
  • Read about his efforts to lead and inspire his community during the May 2010 floods in Nashville – The Tennessean

Thanks for taking some time to get to know one of Nashville’s Best Dressed Bachelors… Don’t forget to check back next week, it could be all about YOU!

It’s all about… Lukeither

Lukeither Willingham, Owner, Lukeither Multimedia & Design

Sometimes I think Twitter and I should have a profit-sharing arrangement because I owe them for many of the great connections that I have made with men and women all over the country.  Lukeither is no exception to this debt.  I began following her because of her Twitter username, AtlantaBizWomen.  I continued following her because she provides inspirational messages daily, is the Chairman of a professional networking group, Real Business Women Network, and she has a wealth of professional resources.

While on a business trip to Atlanta in March, Lukeither and I met in person.  It is always a little nerve-wracking to meet someone in person that you were introduced to online.  In this crazy world, you never know what to expect.  However, Lukeither was just as sweet and interesting in person as she is online.

We have a lot in common like being single mothers, entrepreneurs and having a passion to create successful businesswomen.  I am looking forward to working with Lukeither more in the future to provide professional development seminars for women in the Atlanta area but today is all about Lukeither.  Please take a moment to check her out:

  • Twitter - Lukeither has established herself as a go to person for information and resources with over 1,000 tweople in her network
  • Real Business Women Network - this group is on the move with a recent restructuring of the executive team and many live and virtual resources being added to the 2010 calendar, join the network and share your knowledge and experience with other real business women who enjoy networking
  • Lukeither Multimedia & Design - the supermom is also a successful entrepreneur, check her website for your multimedia and design services, she knows her way around the internet
  • Facebook - Don’t forget to check her out on Facebook, some of her friends may be your friends or you can meet new friends

Thanks for taking a moment to check out Lukeither’s websites and showing her some love.  Don’t forget to check back next week; it could be all about YOU!

It’s all about… Angela

Angela Green, Communications Director, Pioneer Electric Cooperative

While working in Greenville AL last year, I noticed a lack of diverse, professional young adults.  My boss, at the time, suggested I go to lunch with Angela Green.  I had no idea how someone with a name like Angela Green was going to help solve my diversity issues.

We exchanged emails and agreed to meet at Ruby Tuesday for lunch.  Imagine my surprise when this beautiful, young, minority, professional woman entered the restaurant.  We connected because we have quite a bit in common.  Not only are we both professional women but we also have “the switch”.  You know the one that you turn on at work but turn off when you are around your family and friends.  A lot of people have the switch but just haven’t figured out to use.  (Advice: if you don’t know how to use your switch, figure it out… quickly!)

Anyway, Angie is a real go-getter and I am glad to consider her one of my friends.  She is excelling in the energy industry as the Communications Director at Pioneer Electric and taking care of business with her son on the home front.  Last week she received an award from the Alabama Rural Electric Association for her monthly column, “Thinking Green”, in the Alabama Living magazine.  Please take a minute to check out my friend, Angela Green.

  • Get LinkedIn with Angela for a snapshot of her professional accomplishments
  • Become friends on Facebook to get a glimpse of the funny lady behind the professional demeanor
  • Join her Facebook group for Happy Hour Talk… this group meets about once a month for a talk show style format which addresses many of the issues that young professionals are faced with and ALL of the proceeds benefit a charity

Thanks again for checking out my friend Angela… don’t forget to check back next week… it could be all about YOU!
