4 Strategies to Eliminate the Competition

While serving on my local Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors, a member contacted me and wanted the BoD to ban a competing business from an event.  At first, I thought it was joke until he continued the conversation with a high level of seriousness in his voice.  Since then, as I have been working my consulting clients, I am mindful of how they view their competition.  Although you can not make your competition disappear, there are some strategies that you can implement to reduce your worry factor.

  1. Don’t be afraid to get to know your competition. There are some things that your competition is obviously doing well to have remained operational but there are also some things that they can probably improve upon.  Don’t feel as though you have to fill the void of each of your competitors but when creating your marketing strategy, you should be aware of what sets you apart as well as what key service/products will help to keep you in business.
  2. Play nice. Once we find out some areas that our competition may struggle with or hear some client complaints, it may be tempting to shout it from the rooftops so that prospects can see how we are better.  However, it can be turn off to those prospects when you begin to bash your competition.  Rather than focus on their negatives, turn the conversation to your positives.  I have been in several situations where a client began to tell me how they felt I was different from someone who did the same thing that I do.  I knew who they were talking about and could have easily pointed out some additional differences but instead I kept the conversation focused on my products and services.
  3. Be true to yourself. Not only do you need to understand who your competition is and be able to articulate what sets you apart, you have to be sure that you are staying true to the mission of your business.  Many businesses get sidetracked trying to fill a void outside of their core competence and it creates confusion for the customer.  I remember when Hardees started selling fried chicken.  Although the product was very good, it was hard for me to get into because Hardees is known for the burgers.  Needless to say, it didn’t last very long.  If you stray from your primary brand offering, make sure that don’t move too far away from what your business is known for to avoid customer confusion.
  4. Deliver on your promises. Many businesses have a tendency to overpromise to get the customer and under deliver which causes them to lose the customer.  It is less expensive for your business to keep a customer than to market and obtain a new customer.  Take a realistic look at your service/product offering and what you are telling your client they will receive.  Are you delivering on your promise?  If not, you could be the competition that we mentioned in point 1 and eliminating yourself from the market.

In today’s globally competitive marketplace, understanding your unique value to your customers as well as how you’re different from your competition and being able to deliver on your promises will be keys to your success.

It’s all about… Alecia

Alecia Glaize, Executive Director, Escambia County Habitat for Humanity

Running a non-profit is not an easy task, however Alecia makes it look effortless.  She is committed to the Escambia County Habitat for Humanity and works diligently to ensure the organization remains focused on its mission to “Help Build It”.

One of the biggest challenges in running a non-profit is having to juggle so many responsibilities.  Not only do you have to focus on the mission of the organization but you also have to raise funds to keep the organization viable which means seeking donations, grants and volunteers on a continuous basis as well as being accountable to your Board of Directors, and in Habitat’s case the national organization, for staying on target with your  projects.  Alecia has the additional responsibility of selecting people in her area to be placed in homes.  I can not imagine seeing so many worthy applicants and having to choose whose life you will forever alter.

While working with Alecia on various projects, I have seen her committment to the organization, to her family and most of all to her faith.  She is one of those women that would fall in the Super Woman category because she does it all and you never hear her complain.

Today is all about Alecia Curtis Glaize, Executive Director of the Escambia County Habitat for Humanity.  Please visit the Habitat website and join their Facebook fan page (you will also get to see some great pictures from her recent trip to Costa Rica).  I would also like to encourage you to support the Habitat for Humanity program in your area by making a donation, participating in one of their fundraisers or volunteering to participate in an upcoming build.  You would be surprised at what a difference a small contribution of your time, talents and/or resources could make in the life of someone else.

Today is all about Alecia Curtis Glaize, a truly extraordinary woman!

Check back next week, it could be all about YOU!

My Board of Directors Sucks

Problem:

I was asked to join a Board of Directors.  You think, Board of Directors, WOW, this is going to be exciting.  It was anything but exciting.  I think painful was the word that came to  mind more often than not.

It seemed like no one had a clue about the organization was really about, the meetings were not run well, no one ever had any ideas about moving the organizaiton forward, the majority of the people never showed up….

I could go on and on but I think you get the picutre.

Common Sense Policy:

Change is not easy.  If you are the person encouraging the change, you probably won’t be very popular but the only other options are to resign from the Board and spend your time elsewhere or become one of the drones holding the organization back.  The following eight strategies helped me to work efficiently with our Board of Directors (and now it doesn’t suck so bad):

  1. Review By-Laws to ensure the Board is operating in compliance and to determine if there is a need for an update
  2. Make sure everyone understands the mission, vision and purpose of the organization
  3. Host a Board Orientation each year to expectations for each Board member
  4. Try to keep Board Meetings within an hour whenever possible to keep everyone’s attention
  5. Establish committees for special projects so that time is not wasted discussing insignificant details
  6. Follow Robert’s Rules of Order
  7. Meet at a regularly schedule time
  8. Have an agenda

Many organziations to struggling to maintain or even organize a Board of Directors because they are not certain of the purpose of a Board of Directors other than it being legally required nor do they understand how to efficiently run the meetings which causes Board members to become disengaged with the organizaiton.

You don’t want people to sit on your Board for fifty years because you need an infusion of new ideas but you also don’t want a high turnover because it will be difficult to focus on long term projects if you are constantly having to bring new people into the fold.  Your objective is to create a group of people who are passionate about the organization, understand and want to the follow the long term plan to achieve the organization’s goals and people who will serve as ambassadors for your organization.  They should also be prepared to assist with the fundraising or methods that will be used to meet the financial obligations of the organization.

It’s all about… me (LaKesha Womack)

It feels a little vain to write about myself but with the new year upon us and over a thousand views in my first two months writing this blog, I thought I should at least give you a glimpse of the woman behind the blog.

Personal

Let’s start with the good stuff.  People always want to know about your personal life first so I won’t torture you with all of the boring stuff, yet.

I am a single mom of a fantastic and extremely energetic four-year old little boy.  I have never been married (blog coming soon on that) and can’t say that I honestly see Mr. Right in the near future.  I have dated enough Mr. Wrongs and Mr. Not Quite-Rights to realize that it isn’t always them and its not always me.  Relationships are a two way street but both people have to be driving in the same direction.

Sometimes I think I’m kind of lame but then I get a night on the town and realize I still know how to have fun.  My Christian and Cool segment chronicles my journey from Party Girl to Christian Leader.  Some people think this transition happens over night but I am finding that it is a process, it is filled with struggles and slip ups and you can’t be ashamed to admit your mistakes and ask questions.  I am also finding that more people identify with what I am going through than I originally thought.

I love to blog because it’s cheaper than therapy and I get a lot of stuff off my chest while hearing other people’s thoughts.  I try not to take things too seriously.  I’ve learned it’s best to let go and let God.

Professional

I only feel the need to include this because I am sure there are some people that wonder what makes me think I am qualified to write all of this “stuff.”  I am blessed beyond measure to be involved with some awesome organizations that constantly provide me with challenges and opportunities.  I prefer to live on the good side and make the best of any situation ~ then I come over here, switch up some names and blog about it (LOL).

I’m a Business Consultant by day and Blogger by night.  Gotta pay the bills.  I specialize in helping small business owners through seminars and one on one consultations in addition to faciliting seminars and workshops on job sites.  My varied experiences allow me to present on a multitude of subjects.  The best moments are when you can see a light bulb go off in someone’s head because you have said something that really ressonates with them.

Miss Busy Body

I used to think I was good at saying no but once I compiled this list, I realized that maybe I am not as good as I think.  I have a passion to work with each of these groups and am learning to just do my part, stay in my lane and preserve my passion.  Click on the links and join any of the groups that may be of interest to you.

Enough already!

I’m one of those people that will stand up in church and testify that I haven’t always been this focused.  God brought me through many a storm and I still go through them but I have the spiritual maturity to praise Him before, during and after the storm.

I am sooo grateful to all of the readers that visit this site, whether you leave a comment or not.  I read other blogger’s sites and I am in awe at their creative content and writing skills so it makes it even more special to know that my topics are of interest to you.

Don’t ever hesitate to contact me ~ contact@lakeshawomack.com ~ if I can be of assistance to you or your organization.

Hope this satisfied your curiosity or peaked it enough to make you want to come back more often :)
