Happy 35th Birthday to ME!!!

I remember growing up and thinking that 35 would be sooo far down the road…

Well, here it is!

The past year has had its share of ups and downs like most years but this year the valleys seemed especially deep and the mountains very steep.  For the first time, I was convicted, not criminally but spiritually, which put me on a path to a life altering change.

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

Luke 12:48

On my birthday last year, my aunt passed away and I was wrestling with my spirit.  I have always believed in God but I began to sense that He was calling me to a higher level of service. I didn’t think I was good enough, that I was prepared, that it was time… Let’s face it, I had a million and one reasons why I should not follow where He was leading me.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.  And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

Romans 8: 28-30

As I labored through those valleys and climbed those mountains, I began to realize that there was a straight and narrow path that I could follow or I could continue the treacherous journey that I was on.  Needless to say, I surrendered it all.  As we began to usher in the bright flowers of spring, so was I ushering in a new phase of my life.  I still stumble here and there but the lows aren’t so low and the climb isn’t as high.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” 

James 1: 2-6

God has blessed me to see the calendar tick another year onto my life and I am grateful.  Despite whatever circumstances that I find myself in, I praise Him.  I thank each of you, my silent supporters and my vocal encouragers.  I’m nowhere near where I want to be but I thank God that I’m not where I used to be.  I have had to go through a lot to get to this point but… I am here, I am right where I am supposed to be…

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.  I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Philippians 4:11-13

Monday Motivation… Dealing with your haters… 1 Corinthians 4: 1-5

It’s kind of sad that in 2012 we are still talking about people hating on us… You would think that by now, we (and they) would be past all of that.

Sadly, that isn’t the case.  There are still people who don’t want to see you succeed, who do things to tear you down rather than trying to build you up.  This isn’t always a strategic plan that they spend an enormous amount of time laying out but more often than not, it’s their words…

A Word For YOU – 2 Timothy 1

** In the face of persecution, how strong is your faith?  Are you able to encourage others or does your situation consume you?  In this passage, Paul in prison yet he writes to Timothy with words of encouragement… 

2 Timothy 1

 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my dear son:  Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thanksgiving

 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and The Gospel

6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.

13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Examples of Disloyalty and Loyalty

 15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.

Why not you?

Who are you not to be disappointed?  What makes you so special that life should spare you of a few bumps and bruises?  What makes it ok for you to expect more than you give?

Most of us believe that we deserve a wonderful life and that nothing bad should ever befall us.  Why not you?

Is there someone more deserving of heartache than you?  Is there someone who should have the monopoly on pain?

Our strife in life is what contributes to our strength.  If we are never tested then we will not know what we were capable of enduring.  It is through the rigorous climb to the top of the mountain that we are truly able to enjoy the view.

Before you complain about anything or anyone… ask yourself, “Why not me?”
