Should we legislate Christian values?
Everyone seemed to have a variety of emotions yesterday as President Obama announced his support of same sex marriage.
I have noticed a trend in some of the legislation being brought forth in our local and federal governments – they are based on Christian values. I am a diehard Christian but I am also an American who believes that all people are created equal. We are a country comprised of more than Christians and if I remember correctly, our country was founded on the principal of religious freedom. So, how are we now using our religious beliefs to legislate every one else?
In my opinion, President Obama’s personal views on same sex marriage is irrelevant. His policies on how to govern in the best interest of all Americans should be the focus. There are a lot of things that I don’t agree with but it’s not about me. Should someone else be denied their right to the pursuit of happiness because it doesn’t fit my moral beliefs? If this thought process held true then where would women rights and minority rights be? How is it our business to legislate who someone loves or wants to marry?
As a Christian, I have an obligation to tell people about my Savior, Jesus Christ but I don’t have the privilege to judge those who are not like me. That job is reserved for God but somehow our government seems to be taking on a role of moral judge and juror. To add insult to injury of this group of people, we are creating legislation to be voted on and feel justified when the measures pass. As Cory Booker reminded us on The Rachel Maddow Show last night, the majority should not be allowed to vote on the rights of a minority group of people. This includes the civil rights of women, homosexuals and African-Americans.
